Stained Glass Restoration Project: Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church

Stained glass windows are made with lead caming and steel and are designed to be sturdy. However, like all windows, they’re not indestructible and are still subject to damage caused by the elements. Such, unfortunately, was the case for the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, creating an immediate need for stained glass restoration. Our Fort Worth team had the exciting opportunity to be part of this project and help save the church’s beloved stained glass windows.

Storm Damaged Stained Glass

The Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church is a quaint church with a set of three beautiful stained glass windows. The church came to us because their windows had been severely damaged by a recent storm. Each window had two stained glass panels (one for the upper pane and one for the lower) and of the six total panels, three had been completely shattered. One window was fully intact, while the other two had suffered significant damage.

How We Approached the Stained Glass Restoration Process

We had to be creative about the way that we approached these repairs because we needed all of the panels to match. Unfortunately, we were unable to find glass colors that were an exact match since the windows had been built some time ago. This meant that it would be impossible to rebuild the three missing panels and have them match exactly with the ones that had not been damaged.

Therefore, we decided that the best option was to take all of the panels apart and mix the old glass with new glass. This way, each panel would have a mix of colors, allowing all of them to match and look like they were part of the same set.

Not only did this help solve things from an aesthetic perspective, but it also worked to conserve costs. Since we were able to reuse some of the old glass, we were able to cut down on costs for materials. This was a much more affordable option than rebuilding all six panels entirely. The church was very happy about this and so was their insurance company!
